When can I apply for citizenship?
Most green card holders can apply for US citizenship after five years, or three years if married to and living with a US citizen, and USCIS accepts the N-400 up to 90 days before that date. Enter the date on your green card to see your earliest filing date.
Good to know
The date counts from the 'Resident since' date on your green card, not from when the card arrived.
Long trips abroad matter. A trip of more than six months can break continuous residence, and a trip of a year or more generally does. The calculator does not check your travel history.
A criminal record, unpaid taxes or a false claim to US citizenship can make an application risky. Talk to an attorney before filing if any of these apply to you.
This calculator gives general information based on the rules that apply in California as of October 2026. It is not legal advice and does not replace a review of your documents by an attorney. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice. We connect you with independent attorneys licensed in California. Submitting this form does not create an attorney-client relationship; that only happens when you sign an engagement agreement with an attorney.
